Craftsman riding mowet

Last two days I worked on two carpsman 42 inch mowers. I got both running. Both have hydro trannies. Both have drive belts moving. One tranny is locked up can't roll it. The other will roll if you move lever on back. Neither tranny will work. Control levers are connected.

The transaxle is above my pay grade . Any ideas?

Both worked when parked. Bet you've that befot. That's what I heard too.

"Ran when parked" is a good one. When? How long ago? Why was it parked? What was it doing that caused it to be parked?

It would help if you told us what transaxle is in each mower. But that said, most of those were considered non-serviceable when new.

I am under the impression that you can get parts for some of the Hydrogear transaxles and Tuff Torq makes some repair kits available too. If I was warrantying the repair, I would put all the parts in that they recommend and not try cutting corners. Usually the mower is not worth the cost of a transmission repair.

Most of the Hydrogear transaxles I am familiar with will work with 20w50 motor oil in them. I am thinking the last Tuff Torq I had apart had 10w40 synthetic in the repair kit.

Of course, you could check the simple things like whether there is oil in them. It should be nearly to the top of the case. And of course make sure the pulley is still tight on the input shaft and not slipping. If you can get the vent out, you can check/add oil there.

I don't think there's much fixing on those. Craftsman is low priced stuff these days. I made a $2300.00 mistake in buying on some years back. The only thing that worked right was the hour meter and I got about 150 hours before it finally died. That's pretty much junk IMO. If they ran the trans dry or had a kid using it as a "drag racer" or tried to use it as a D9 Cat and over heated it, there may not be any fixing to it.

"Ran when parked" is one of the top catch phrases of the 21st century, right behind "that said or that being said".
