JD 212 Starter issue

I recently acquired a nice 1975 JD212, serial 056855M, with a very good deck. However the starter doesn't spin, even with jumper right to the input on the starter. It gives a little hum. OK, it needs to come off but I cannot see an easy way. Have a manual, not much help. Checked YouTube, no videos on 212 starter removal.
Any experienced members here, can give me some tips ? Thanks. C Kain

I always found it was easier and faster to loosen and remove the motor to change the starter.

Mark-Ia is probably right. remove the engine to change the starter. Even if you can move it forward an inch or two may help getting to the starter bolts.

One thing: Try connecting a jumper cable between the battery negative (-) and the starter housing or engine block. My 212 has rubber isolators on the engine mounts and your starter may be just wanting a better ground so it can get full amperage through the starter. I work on Wheel Horses and this is an issue on them sometimes.

turns out all I had was a starter 'stuck' in the ring gear.
after rocking the crank, it popped back and seems ok !!!
