Keeping mice out of my Briggs

I have a Model 23 B & S on one of my old tractors that the mice love to build nests in.
I have the sheet metal off now and am restoring it. I don't want to reassemble it until I figure out a way to keep them out.
They will fill up the area above the flywheel with about a lunch box full of grass and other junk.
I'm sure this doesn't do any good for the motor as it blocks the air to cool it.
Any suggestions?

Have you tried rat poison? I use Krazy Kat or something like that, comes in green 1" squares with a hole through it if you want to thread it on a wire, white plastic tub with green and black, maybe some yellow paint. Guarantee you my rat/mouse problem disappeared big time and I was INFESTED.

Try setting a bucket of water nearby, with a 1x2 running up to it. Then put something in that floats with peanut butter on it. There very own private pool.

I've put wire mesh in where they enter. Seems to help. I've also removed cover plates and hatches for concealment, unless they are actually really needed. I've learned not to tarp up- / seal up / cover up things and build a nice habitat for them to hide in, I leave things open so the breeze can blow thru.

Ya mean one like this?? Couldn't even turn the flywheel after one winter. Just love them mice. Just glad they didn't chew everything up.
