Repower Garden Tractor

I am wanting to repower my old White GT 1655, but the way I have power to the hydrostat the hydro is turning backwards. Does that matter? I need a stub shaft on the front of my engine to turn it the right direction. They don't seem to be available for my repower engine.

Usually hydro tractors drive the hydro off the flywheel end of the engine and the "normal" output shaft is used to drive the mower deck. Using the flywheel end then the input shaft turns the right direction.

Yes, it does matter. The charge pump only works one way. But, on some it can be reversed.

More info needed. What kind of Hydro? engine?

What engine are you repowering with?

TractorData says the tractor is similar to an MTD 990. There are stub shafts
available for almost all repower engines, but you have to look for them.
Try eBay or Amazon or your engine supplier. You buy a stub shaft that
fits your engine, and then you may have to have a shorter or longer driveshaft
to the hydrostat.

That is a tough situation.
There are adapters for the Harbor Freight Predator engines
since they are Honda clones.
You might need to trade the old Briggs for a Kohler K-series.

Electric start, horizontal engine that is not designed for a stub shaft.

A piece of round stock can be machined to make a stub shaft. Choose one a little larger than the fly wheel nut. Drill the center just deep enough to clear the crank shaft that protrudes through the nut. Then tap the hole cutting threads that match your crank threads. Mill the new shaft down to fit your pulley or coupler. Mill a slot for the key. Cut it to the proper lenght. Screw it into the crank shaft to replace the fly wheel nut.

If the engine cover shroud can be cut/drilled for the shaft to stock through.
