Allis Chalmers 712H

I just picked up an Allis Chalmers 712H in real good shape (not running) for $400 with 42" deck, snowplow, and rear tiller. All the books and service receipts came with it. The carb was gummed up solid so a rebuild kit and new float and couple
Cans of brake clean and I had her back running.

Won't start with key switch but starts great jumping solenoid with screwdriver.

I'm going to change fluids this week and take it to car wash to get steam cleaned good.

Any weak points on these tractors I need to watch out for?

These are nice machines built tough. I have a 716h, the only thing to really watch for are the drive belts, I have not found an aftermarket belt that will last more than about 15 minutes (this is the belt from the PTO to the mower deck or snowblower) the belt in the deck or for the tiller do not have the extra twists and turns and aftermarket works fine. Simplicity dealers can still supply the belts and almost any other part you might need. Mine is 45 years old and still running fine.

What you say about belts is absolutely true, not only for AC but all makes. Buying aftermarket belts is throwing money away.

Disagree, Premium Gates or Dayco belts will equal longevity of Simplicity belts at 1/3 the price!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I happen to know a guy that works for Gates and has access to all p/n and constructions both from catalog and special OEM parts.

I have tried gates belts on my tractor and have only had them run for about 15 minutes. On the AC 700 series (and Simplicity 7000 series) the PTO to implement belts are really twisted. The PTO pulley for the mower deck is under the driver's left leg when sitting on the tractor and runs in the same plane as the tires. The belt runs over this pulley and goes down towards the ground to two idler pulley (one flat, one vee) and then turns 90 degrees and runs parallel to the ground and rolls 90 degrees to the pulley on top of the mower that runs in the same plane as the mower blades. I do not know if other manufacturers do this as well, the other mowers I know about are not as twisted (and I do not by any means know about that many). If you have a number for a gates belt that will replace the mower drive belt I will be happy to know what the number is. I'm only working from my own experience with this machine, and would like to find belts for less than 40 bucks.

For the starting problem in the first post, there are safety switches in the PTOs (there can be two) and the hydro control that prevent the starter from working.

Get your oem belt part numbers off the decal under the hood. Have parts store to cross to gates industrial belts. This same mower drive belt on my simplicity has been on for 13 years, and it has seen some very hard use. So always go with the industrial belt.

The Gates belt for this is 6891BR product number 922756891. It's a kevlar cord wrapped cure belt. Gates is not the OEM supplier for this, not sure who is. I'm having the plant send me some new ones, I can get an extra for you to try too.

I also found a mouse nest under the battery box and there was caustic mouse pi$$ all over the neutral interlock and it was stuck open. I just made a jumper between key switch and solenoid skipping both interlocks.
