Engine for Deere Z520A ztr mower

I need a replacement engine for the Z520 mower that dad blew up last summer. The Cub Cadet dealer would not take it in trade, so he gave it to me. What is the best place to get a new small engine? It currently has a Kohler 25 hp Estate series engine. This is a vertical shaft if it makes any difference. The person I talked to last fall said that that engine has been replaced by something newer and better. I do not remember what he said that was. I am sure all dealers will recommend the same engine. Just looking at cost and shipping costs to central Iowa. Probably similar costs from all in the business. I had looked on e-bay and they were quite a bit higher costs than the person I talked to. Also if there is a dealer to stay away from, I would appreciate knowing that!

Go on ebay and get a Briggs and Stratton Vtech engine. Going for about $800.oo. Well worth the money. I think they go up to 26hp. There is also a larger series. I have two of them and they are great engines. Make sure to measure you're shaft size and length VERY carefully. Bolt in drop in for most of those mowers.

Without knowing the exact model and spec. number of your Kohler engine, Its hard to help you. Just be warned, Most replacement engines don't come with mufflers, the OEM for the chassis-in this case Deere, supplies one that fits their chassis. They are usually priced over $100. The muffler is the killer in a lot of small engine swaps.
And like Jeffcat said, measure your crankshaft very carefully. Zero turn engines usually have either 1" or 1-1'8" diameter crankshafts. And the length is pretty important. The length becomes even more important when the crank has a shoulder on it.

You get a gold star on that muffler. Forgot that item. You can pick one uo from a blown engine at a mower junk yard. He might even be able to pick up a whole used engine. Didnt think of it till you brought up the muffler. I have picked up several used engines over the years and have found some real deals. Let us see if trk gets lucky.

Don't know what you need. Did learn that most mowers have the deck stamped for a 10" bolt circle which fits single and V twins. Last year I bought an 18 and 20 hp BS V twins off ebay for about $600 with free shipping, both new factory overruns....surplus engines after production like for a type mower was closed down type thing. One replaced a 17.5 single on my JD L110 (the L 120 is the same machine with a V twin anyway), and the other replacing a Kohler Courage single on a Husqvarna 46. Both drop ins on mounting dimensions. Electrical connectors matched pin for pin and location, fuel line matched but since the throttle on the single is on the left side and on the V twins it'd in front I needed to get longer cables. Bought the JD dual controlsoff ebay for 25 bucks each which were super controls....mounted to the left side plastic cowling. Love the conversions.

I noticed Northern tool is advertising BS twins at about that price too.
