Murray brake noise

I bought an older (red) Murray mower with a bad deck that I remade into a utility tractor to haul my small sprayer around with and maybe string some barbed wire. It works great with the sprayer except that it makes a gawd-awful noise if I brake hard. Any Murray folks know what I need to do to fix it? gm

Wellllllll. I have several lawn and garden machines and most of the time the brakes need a real good clean. Usually ya need to pull off one of the back wheels to get to the brake assembly. Held on by two bolts. Disk is about 4 inches. Clean the little pads and push rods so there is no rust. Tinny smear of silicone grease. You want to adjust the linkage so with the pedal all of the way up you have fully engaged power. With you riding the machine you should be able to push the clutch in and start to coast without the brake grabbing. Push just a littl more and the brake starts to grab. Takes a little fiddling around but the machine works so much better.

My first thought is don't use it for a tractor. The brakes are probably screaming for mercy.

I hope you live someplace that is pancake flat. A downhill run could be a killer. Literally. Water weighs something over 8 pounds per gallon. So 20 gallons is something over 160 pounds, not counting the sprayer itself or the weight of the driver.

Depending on which model Murray you have I guess if the brake is external you can take it apart and see if the pads are still in there.
