John Deere X300

My father-in-law has a JD X300 that will not start. It will run on ether for a few seconds when I shoot some into the air cleaner. I changed the fuel filter, but it did not help. Appears to be getting gas to
the carb, so I am thinking this is a carb problem. Anybody have any ideas on what to check on the carb? Thanks.

First thing I would do us change the spark plug. A lot of times it is simple things that cause these small engines to fail. Some of these have an electronic fuel shut off that can cause problems also.

If it fires on either, the problem is not spark.

Is this the first time it ran this year? Make sure the fuel solenoid in the carburetor is working. They tend to gunk up and stick while the machine is stored. The float/float valve could also be sticking. One of the jets in the carburetor could also be plugged.

I beg your pardon but I have had them fire on either and not gas. Change the plug and it ran fine. I am no expert but I have been around for a day or two.
