Case 444 front axle slop

A while ago I asked about eliminating front axle slop on a Case 444. Well it is possible. Here's how I did it. There is a fella making and selling these parts on Ebay but I don't see how you can get the exact diameter without reaming out the holes. Anyway, I have no slop in my front axle now. Two more front axles to go.

I tried to put a comment with each picture, but that's beyond me. The axle and frame were reamed to 1 11/16 and I made a pin with a nice tight fit. and 2 washers 1/4" thick held in place with a 1/2" bolt. I also added another grease fitting to the bottom of the frame since the top one is tough to get to with all the sheet metal in place. Mine still had the plastic cap over the origonal grease fitting. Don't think it was ever greased. Last year I got a good deal on a South Bend lathe at an auction

I did the same deal with my big Husqvarna garden tractor. Has a cast iron axle but has a big nylon bushing in there. I replaced it with a bronze bushing. One inch bushing, has a 5/8 center hole and about one and a half long. You can see the old one is kinda a bit out a round oval. Axle tips a little and locks the steering. Something you might want to do if the kit is not. I cross drilled the bolt about an inch and then a little sideways drill. Installed a driven grease fitting. Can grease the front axle in a snap. Sweet !

Wait....never mind I can just see your little fitting under the nice paint job. That is a good thing.

Then you are doing really good. Great minds just gotta tinker with things till it is more gooder!!!
