Hi, Im new to the forum.

I own a 70 sears suburban SS12 great little unit.. my trouble is the mower deck.

model # 917253150 the spindles are really eating up bearings. Ive rebuilt them twice and its a bear of a job. I have to cut the inner races off the spindles and in the end the mandrel caps get beat up pretty good. I've been able to fabricate my own mandrel caps out of, trailer wheel bearing caps.. Im at the point where its just to much work..

Is there a replacement spindle I can buy with sealed bearings? Is there a modification I can do. Im not to optimistic, as the center spindle would need to be replaced as well..

thanks in advance Chuck

Hi, if you have a set of old bearings take them to a bearing supply store they maybe able to find a sealed bearing that would work,

Couple of things what is the condition of the spindles? Has the bearing turned on the shaft and it is now worn down where the bearing rides? Get a good quality bearing. A good bearing shop can do some measuring for you. Can you still get a complete unit from Sears? When I rebuilt my deck Sears had everything in stock.

the bearing is impossible to remove from the shaft I had to destroy the bearing just to remove it. Im going through alot of bearings. at least one mandrel a season. This is simply not sustainable. Is there a newer mandrel I can swap it out with. I removed the bearings and took emery cloth to the spindle, now the bearings are easier to remove. sears only stocks the bearings and they dont last. any ideas?

Hi Chuck, I've only rebuilt a couple of the spindles on my decks I have 3 decks 2 42" and 1 48" and have had no problems with bearings going bad other than the 2 spindles, I grease them once a year in the fall when I remove the decks and clean them up and pump them full of grease. Here's the bearing numbers I got them at a local bearing place The cups are LM1910 and the cones are LM 11949-20024
