The variable speed on my 210 is not working. I'm not very familiar with it since I haven't had it very long. I think that the pulley or sheave widens and narrows if working right. The speed of the tractor never changes regardless of VS lever position. Is there someway to grease this or do I have to take it all apart and clean it?
Also, the speed of the tractor not only does not change but when making a tight turn or driving up a slight incline the mower will begin to hesitate as if a belt is slipping? Is that the variable speed slipping or the drive belt slipping?

For the variator to work correctly, it has to have the correct OEM belts (or EXACT substitutes) installed and then be properly adjusted.

Of course, the center, moveable part of the variator can stick or wear and get loose, as well.

Setup and troubleshooting is covered in the official shop manual I've linked below, in Section 50.

Just as Bob said but I would like to emphasize the center pulley. If the floating center piece has even a small amount of wear in the bushing it will cock and pinch instead of sliding when you move the handle. If your having troubles even with new belts that is the next thing to look at and the likely source of your issues. Last I knew repair parts will still available at Deere.

Good advice from the ghys but one more thing. I would HIGHLY recommend you use OEM belts from the dealer. Some are half sizes and can drive you crazy cause other types will NOT work.

I bought a NEW one of those center pieces once from Deere as the one I had bushing was worn to the max. limit in the book. Can't buy just the bushing. Well I measured the NEW one and it was over spec. too !!!!

Can you pull the pedal up with your foot and get more speed? Many times the spring will break that puts the tension on the whole works. www.jdparts.com for a look at what you've got.

I've got a 110 that doesn't get much use that sticks from no use. I have the best luck taking the belts off, spraying brakkleen while spinning the center sheave and lubing it with dry graphite while spinning it. Replace both belts with JD parts and adjust variator by the book.
