Gravely model L

I rescued this machine from a scrap run. Was given to the previous owner who let it sit in his garage for 20 years with no cylinder head. Turns out the reason it was stuck was not the rusty cylinder but something is wrong with the crank pin. I have the crankshaft assem. out of the engine. There is this plug with a screwdriver slot over the crank pin. I didn't force it , I wasn't sure if it was left hand thread or something. Would you tell me how to get this thing apart? Thanks, Fritz

It has been decades since I've had the bottom end of a Gravely engine apart. It sounds like the "plug with a screwdriver slot" you are describing is the head of the spreader bolt. I'm just guessing that you would "tap" the other end of the bolt to knock the entire spreader bolt out of the crank pin.

You don't mention the vintage of your "L". They were made from the late 1930's through the early 1970's. I don't think that the bottom ends changed much over the years, but the part numbers did change. You may want to look at some of the Gravely manuals that area available free online on several web pages.

Go to the "Gravely Tractor Club of America" web site. On the right side look for manuals. Then go into the service manuals for Model "L" walk behind machines. That web site is Loaded with tons of information. By the way. Those engine parts must all go back together Perfectly! Also get all of the timing marks aligned.
