cub cadet smoking

All of the members who did mind reading or owned crystal balls are no longer here. If you actually want help with your problem, then begin by stating which model of Cub Cadet you have along with the Series of Kohler engine. When was the last time you had the engine tuned.....including performing a valve adjustment? Blue smoke is a sign of oil being burnt.

First of all blue smoke at startup is common. It may be caused by worn valve guides. Why does it bother you if is goes away when the motor warms up? If your happy with the way it runs I would just make sure it gets clean oil and filters and keep it running. It may help if you switch to 15-40 wt. oil.

My 30 year-old Kohler M18 does the same thing, otherwise it runs terrific. I wish I had the time to do a top-end job but I don't, or spend $hundreds at a machine shop to make it perfect.

Tom is right! Model number and engine make and model help a lot.

But I'll take a wild guess and you probably have a 1000 series with the Kohler Courage engine in it. A Kohler SV590, SV600, SV610 or some such.

Have you raised the hood and watched it while starting up? Before you start, look down on the muffler-(Remember I am thinking 1000 series Cub Cadet) Is there any oil on top of the muffler? If the muffler is oily, that is where your smoke is coming from and you need to replace your valve cover gasket.

Or is the smoke actually coming out of the muffler's outlet?

Bet that it's a Courage engine.

Valve cover leaking.

Kohler Courage engines supplied to MTD for Cub Cadet mowers are notorious for valve cover leaks. Best to just year it down and replace it/them.

Well a valve cover gasket leak is not going to produce smoke on cold startup. Also, combusted oil produces blue smoke vs. oil cooking on a hot surface is going to be gray or white. And unless the muffler is soaked in oil most it will evaporate before before it even smokes.

Sorry.. But yes they do.. Repaired to many of them for people.

When you shut the engine off the oil continues on drip onto the exhaust. As soon as the exhaust starts to get even a tad bit warm it will cause smoke to pour out from the front of the engine and you would think that it is coming out of the exhaust. Bad design.

A good replacement gasket kit comes with a new cover, gasket AND a metal piece that directs oil back into the oil passages on the engine block to keep it from puddling in the valve cover at the gasket. Dont use the metal piece and you will be smoking again with a year or two.

You truly are incredible. First off, you fail to provide any details that would allow members to EASILY help you with your problem but....they managed to figure it out anyway. Now, after being shown a photo of the kit and being told it is available on e-Bay, you expect to be given a part number and parts source.

OK..... use the link below and it will take you to an e-Bay Seller who will ship the kit to you.

Once you get the kit in your hands, I expect that you will post once again looking for a volunteer to bring his tools to your house and install this kit on your tractor.......FOR FREE.... of course.

It is nice to see that you have the decency to return to this thread and thank ME and others who were so helpful in solving your problem in the absence of the information you should have posted at the outset but failed to do so. Hopefully, you will have learned from this experience and will not make the same mistakes down the road. Go in peace.

You can search fr the Part Number for the good kit

[b:befc02764e]Kohler 20-096-14-S[/b:befc02764e]

99.9% of the places you look carry the new gasket kits.

Best to go to a local dealer or parts supply place. That way you can see that the kit you get contains the metal piece.

Avoid the web sites [b:befc02764e]Repair Clinic, Sears and E Replacement parts[/b:befc02764e]. For you may or may not get the good one from them for the old and new kit uses the same part number.
