1987 JD 318 P218G stalling

Just figured I would inform anyone who is curious that I determined that my ignition module is what is the problem. After sitting for 4days in very frigid weather I did the ignition module test before starting and my voltage drops to 1vdc every one revolution. I proceeded to start the 318 and she fired right up. It ran for 8min exactly and she stopped. Did the ignition module test and no voltage drop at all constantly staying at the 12.3vdc battery voltage. In the process of removing the engine from 318, as of right now everything is disconnected besides the yoke/u joint from drive. Will pull out the engine and remove flywheel tomorrow morning. Also does anyone have any other valid suggestions that they recommend I do since I have the engine out?? This is my 1st time working on a 318 JD and am not experienced with these models. One other thing my battery light stays on even before I had this problem with it stalling does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing my light to stay on even though it's a new battery and it always starts...?? Is it the voltage regulator? I would really like to fix that problem as well. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

Voltage regulator and or stator problems. You should have told us all of your problems first time around and we would hove told you how to diagnose it. The guys can tell you what to look for with knowledge and a good digital meter. Has this tractor ever ACCIDENTALLY been hooked up backwards??? You could have fried both parts. You could also just have a broken wire. When you have the engine out and on the bench get back to us. Then someone really familiar with the engine you have can walk you through it.

Depending on how JD wired the system. The battery light would not come from the engine.The only light from the engine would be a low oil pressure light.I would get a print of the JD side.

I have a 318 and my battery light comes on a lot too. Every time a voltage check at the battery posts with my volt meter has shown over 13v-so the engine is charging the battery.. (Well, actually except for the time I fried the aftermarket voltage regulator)

If you look under the instrument panel you see a rectangular black box. I am assuming that box controls all the instrument panel functions and it is seeing a problem that is not there or is caused by a bad connection someplace other than the charging circuit. It does not affect operation of the electric clutch.

I've lived with that problem for years. If Mother Deere was willing to share the info, I would probably have obtained an electrical schematic for it and looked for the problem.
