K46 T40 turf torq tranxle

I had posted in the Deere forum as I was looking at some Deere's with these. I also think many other brands use these too. Seems like several people had problems with them. Are these something to avoid all together or are some holding up ? Need a mower for just 1 acre lot with a house on it. Might just have to look at a lot more expensive machines.

GOOGLE is your friend. Type in "Tuff Torq K46 feedback" and you will quickly see that you should avoid tractors that use this trans-axle. Look at how many complaints there are from multiple sources that are not related to one another. These are a low quality unit built for lawn tractors designed to sell for a low price in the entry-level market. In other words, you get what you pay for. Quality and longevity comes at a price. The problem with MOST used lawn tractors is that you have no idea what it was subjected to by the first owner or how many hours are TRULY on the tractor. Look at tractors with the K66 hydro in them...at the very least.

I have read those and am really second guessing buying a small mower even though that is all I need.

I have seen those in Deere, Husqvarna, and Simplicity. I work for a Husqvarna dealer.

Last year I did replace one in a Deere with over 800 hours on it-I took it apart later and the differential gears had worn pretty badly and the splines were worn off one of the axles to the point it was slipping inside the differential.

I have seen very few of them fail in the Husqvarnas that we sell here in the dealership. The few failures I have seen in Husqvarnas happened while still under warranty.

those trannies are in several different colored machines. like said earlier i have only been in couple here at shop and those units were both beat to he!!! by owner. would not be afraid of them they are just not for bulldozing other wise you should be fine

I have a Tough Torque transaxle in a JD L110 I bought 15 (at least) years ago, was my primary riding mower for awhile and now is my "Gator". I was abusing it one day and broke it. I removed it, opened it, found the gear I tore up, contacted Tough Torque. They supplied me with the replacement part, explained that mine was the low end and for one thing had conventional 10-30 whereas their higher priced units used 10-30 synthetic and all. Soo mine got syn. too on the refill. Couldn't ask for a nicer bunch of people to work with you in solving a problem.....got a free Gimmie cap with my parts too. Wow. Used to have to buy a new truck or tractor to get one of those and sometimes (1998 Dodge) had to ask for it. I think the salesman bought it out of his pocket.

Recently I put an 18hp BS V twin on the 110. In doing so, I put in new belts and checked the pulleys and all. Since I was going through everything I thought I'd check the transaxle and see how things were looking. I opened it and had another look around. Thought I'd check the TT www site and see if anything new was happening. They have upped their oil requirements to 10-40 full syn. So off to the store for some of that. Going to bet you that a lot of the problems they may have been having with their low end units were a result of oil breakdown under high stresses.

Times have changed at Tuff Torq. All ordering is to be done online after you register. I called and never could get to talk with a tech or could get to the spot to leave a message. All the guy on line who fixed them with new parts for $200.00 well those days are gone too. Going to run around a little over $ 400.00 now ! They spec. 5w50 synthetic oil now too.
