Hi looking for a Mr.Combs. I was told to ask for you regarding my JD 318 P218G . I was hoping you could help me out?

I will bet you can get your answers from the man that made this youtube video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_W6G2fr5LIQ

I posted an answer yesterday, but I don't see it now.

anyway, IMO, your module is working. the slightly low voltage reading when it switches could be wiring or meter related.

Check the coil resistance both across the primary connections and the two plug connections. The wires must be disconnected to do this.
check cold, if that looks ok, run until it quits, then retest.

I agree that it could be an outside problem. As you posted. But if he test the module cold out of the system and gets normal readings. Then hot and gets a bad reading. It would have to be the module. Most of the ones I had problems with failed completely. Any way I have a new module on the way.

I was referring to test the coil hot and cold, not the module. I've seen a number of Onan coils fail hot only. Don't know if the wiring internally shorts or opens when heated, but they do fail hot.

I agree that the module normally is a hard failure. And when they fail, it's a good idea to replace the trigger magnet also.

I never had problems with the old coils. I replaced one since 1980. But the new coils seem to have a higher failure rate.Seems some of the new stuff is not as good as the old stuff.

Called him this morning. To tell him about the part coming to him. He said it was -25. To cold for this old man to worry about a lawn mower until spring.
