John Deere 318 1987 shutting down after 10min P218G Onan

Hello looking for the ONAN GURU Billy
Schafer if he could possibly help me out?
This is my issue. My JD shuts down after
10mins of running and then it won't start
up until after about an hour of cooling
off. When is does shut off I have no spark
on either side of cylinders. I replaced the
condenser/capacitor and my coil no change.
The only thing left is my ignition module.
I did the ignition module check according
to the manual and other online forms and
what I get is when rotating the flywheel my
meter fluctuates from 12vdc to 0.9034vdc in
1 revolution. In the manual it states that
it should fluctuate between 12vdc to
anywhere between 1to1.5vdc. What my meter
is reading does that indicate that my
ignition module is the problem?

Does sound like the module. But let me check The PSB list. See if there was a problem that the factory knew about. I know there were some generator ign modules that had a high failure rate

Hi sir, thank you very much I sincerely appreciate your help. I'm not familiar with what you mean by the PSB list but I will wait for your reply. Thank you once again!

Sorry I keep forgetting. PSB Product Support Bullitens. Is what the factory sends out. When an item has to many problems of failures.Helps to be able to look things up and find what the factory did to fix the problem.

I didn't find any failure warnings with that module. But I don't think it is switching properly. I would also try the low oil pressure switch. If it fails it will kill the ignition. Which manual are you looking at. If it does turn out to be the module. Let me know before you buy one. I have a contact that may have one. You could get for free

It's a Onan engine service manual for P216 P218 P220 P224 performance series.

Also the serial number and model numbers are Onan-P218G-I/10462B
Serial #-E873208633

Good morning Mr.Shafer, just wondering if you received my reply regarding the information you needed? Thank you.

I was just fixing to send you a message.I sent my contact your numbers. He will check his stock see if he has one. Been going back over it and it does still sound like the module is bad.Thought more about the oil pressure switch but ruled it out. I would test the module when cold. Then when hot after the shutdown. If the voltage drops hot then you know it is bad.Same problem showed up on the rv units.

OK I will do that I'm off work tomorrow and Friday and I will have a chance to work on it. I will let you know what's going on either way. I will still keep my eyes open on this site for your reply. Thank you very much sir!! I do appreciate your help!

Thank you for the part number sir. You let me know at your earliest convenience regarding your friend having a module. Thanks again!

You can check Salem Power Equipment LLC for parts. They have on-line manuals for all Onan engines. I have done business with them and they are very good in getting the correct part and providing the information you need. Also Boomer's used Onan Engine parts deals in all Onan parts both used and new. Good prices and reliable.

Good day Mr. Shafer. I may need the same module for my 16 h.p. Onan on my Ingersoll. The engine Number is P216-G. Spec.# is 10940C. I am not sure what the part number is for the Ignition Module. All I could find is a Case number of C32294. I have replaced many electrical parts up to this point and have narrowed the problem down to the ignition Module or the Coil. The coil is almost new and I get good spark on both cylinders. But the engine has quit running after it has gotten hot more than once. You can e-mail me with your thoughts on the problem and let me know if an ignition module is available.
