I have one of the older Massey 8 hp with blown motor. Has any one put in a bigger motor. Want to swap out motor. How big, what kind, any problems to do it.
Thanks Kerry

In order to provide you with a useful answer, someone would need to
know the model of the tractor and the engine that is currently on it.

I am not where the tractor is at the moment, but it is an early 70's with the Tecumseh 305 cc 1cyl engine. Just wondering if some one has changed to another engine (larger maybe) and if there is any trouble.
Cheers Kerry

I sold the Tecumseh engine for $65.00 and bought a 10hp Briggs with electric start for my Troy Bilt tiller. I put new tines on it too. Hal

I have a MF7, which I think is very similar to your MF8, if your MF8 has a grill that resembles the 135 MF tractor.

It came to me with a Briggs 8 hp flathead in it, running but not running all that well.

When I pulled the engine out to put rings in it, I found that the engine was mounted with just 2 bolts. When I reinstalled it I had to grind part of the deck belt clutch brackets under the frame for clearance for the bolts. I forget if the bolts ended up in there with full hex heads or not, you can shave part of the head off for clearance if necessary.

The battery tray was notched out to clear the Briggs gas tank that hangs on the side of the cylinder, like so Briggs horizontal shaft engines had back then. So, although the engine has a starter, there was no place for the battery. But there was a recoil starter on the engine, so I never put electric start back on the mower.

There was a notch cut in the hood to clear the Briggs air cleaner. Although I changed over to a smaller air cleaner, I had to live with the notch in the hood.

The Briggs 8 hp. muffler more or less blew out through the screen grille and had burned the paint off it in one area.

By looking at other MF7s and MF8s, I found that there were at least 3 different mufflers it could have had. The first version (MF7) is a basic 7 hp tecumseh muffler with a deflector that makes the exhaust go out the side just below the hood.

The second is a variation of the tecumseh muffler that exits into an approximately 1" pipe with a heat shield around it that goes down to frame level on the right side just behind the front axle.

The third version used the regular 5hp tecumseh muffler on a bracket at frame level just behind the hood, with an exhaust pipe from the cylinder down to it. I rigged up my Briggs 8 hp. using the tecumseh muffler mounted down on the frame in that bracket. I used 2 exhaust flanges cut from a Snapper exhaust pipe and either 1" or 1-1/4" bx flexible electrical conduit between them for and exhaust pipe.
