Cub cadet 123

I have a chance to but a 123 cub with no engine and bad tires for $30. I have a set of tires so no problem there. PTO clutch and other associated brackets are there. Sheet metal has no rust or dents but horrible paint. Is this worth messing with? I have a ranch king and I suspect its not going to live another year. I want an older well made hydrostat garden tractor for mowing pulling a cart and snow removel. I forgot to mention it has a good deck and I have a front blade. I'm thinking I might be able to get him to throw in a snow blower. I can get ahold of either a Kohler or a harbor freight special assuming I don't have to modify it to far to put in a predator. I don't like to change them past where I can't put it back.

Swapping something else in there is difficult although Small Engine Warehouse in Indiana used to sell a kit to put a Tecumseh or B&S Intek in them. You have to get the center line height right, the Cub Spec Kohler 301 and 241 engines for this application have a shallow oil pan to get it right. A 123 is a narrow frame so you might not have a lot of room for an engine with an inclined cylinder and remember you have to build an adapter for the drive shaft on the flywheel side of the engine to drive the drive shaft and work out acuating the PTO clutch for the mower/snowblower. Speaking of snow blowers mostout there for the old units are only single stage, don't know it that work for you. If you can score a Cub Spec Kohler they run a good long time if they're right when you start, costly to rebuild, but still a lot of engine if taken care of properly.

Not a fan of a shallow pan Kohler but you can get a kit for one on eBay for around $100. They do last well I just prefer something that holds more oil. How big of an engine should a 123 have?

Hi, easy for me to spend someone else's money but for what they sell for around here I think you would come out better buying one that is complete and running. Very easy to dump a lot of money in one in that condition. If the blower is in decent shape and you can get him to throw in they sell for 100 or so this time of year. If you watch craigs list people advertise them
for cheap. But you have to keep watch and act quickly because the parts dealers all watch and snatch the bargains

Are the 123s a wide frame? I believe I have a engine from one of those. It was squeezed into a cub original that I bought (hood wouldn't close with it on).
The engine ran when we had it on the original and its been in a shed since it was removed.

I'd sell you the engine and/or the cub original if you are interested. Has the optional rear PTO.

Located in central IA.

I guess I'm more asking about quality of this particular model. I'm gonna probably have more in it than its worth when its done but my thoughts are a to obtain a more or less complete unit tear it down to the last bolt rebuild the whole machine and with proper maintnence have something that I basicly don't have to worry about for thirty years or so. I never are cubs come up for sale here. To many pullers. Case is the bid one here. I have a 106 cub that is a very high quality machine but I want a hydro to go with it.

(quoted from post at 15:19:26 02/09/17) Are the 123s a wide frame?

The Cub Cadet 123 is a Narrow Frame tractor. It is has the distinction of Cub Cadet's first Hydro Transmission production model.

The correct Kohler engine for this tractor is: K-301AS-47504D

Wouldn't be worth it to me, if you're not in hurry for something right now something will pop up. I bought of 520 Wheel Horse out of a news paper add for $495 mainly for the mower deck, the guy said the 20 horse motor was junk. When I picked it up I found out it also came with a blower and snowplow. Got it running later and all it needed was head gaskets. Most I ever gave for a garden tractor was $700 about 15 years ago in Feburary, he was moving south and couldn't take.
