A CASE of neglect

Well with the advice from Tom Arnold and the rest of You fine folks on this site I tore down the rear end on the 644 today and found that I purchased someone else's headache. After finding silicone in place of a gasket I knew it would be rough going but I continued on anyway and found one sorry case of pure neglect on the former owner/owners part. With all of the worn out parts would it be in My best interest to fix or find another rear end altogether? I attached some pictures and let Me warn You it isn't pretty, You may want to keep all of those weak of heart and small children away from the computer while viewing.

Looks like you have a much larger problem than a broken differential bolt and housing in need of repair. I would opt for a used transaxle complete as there are plenty of them out there. Any 400 series transaxle should bolt right in.

As Bob stated above, your best option is to locate a complete axle from a 442, 444, 446 or 448. Also, any trans-axle from a 4000 Series Ingersoll will work. But your best interests would be served by opening up that used trans-axle for inspection. Clean it out properly. Look for any worn parts. Install new seals and gaskets along with new carrier bolts. You cannot use a trans-axle from a 200 or 3000 Series because those use 5 bolt wheels and the motor runs at the wrong speed. As for your old trans-axle, you could make a piece of yard art out of it. Weld it together using the axle shafts as the legs, the housing as the body and the gears for a head with ears and nose.

Look on e-Bay by typing in CASE LAWN MOWERS. Get the PIN for the tractor that the trans-axle was removed from along with the model number. That way, we can tell you the year.

Thank You all for the replies, and Ken I would like to take You up on that transaxle how can I get in touch with You?

KEN, I DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO CONTACT YOU BUT I NEED A TANK AND COOLER THAT IS LOCATED UP FRONT ON A 444 OR 446 CASE LAWN TRACTOR. I'LL PUT MY E-MAIL IN IF YOU WANT TO EMAIL ME. THANKS.
