I have a engine that I can't find any info on.
I know it is a onan built by another company, but don't know the hp or what it was in.
The model # on it is Zx390 136644.
I will welcome any info,I think it is new,I probably have had it for about 15 years.
I want to start it and see if it is ok.
Thanks
Ed

About 20 years back, Onan stopped making engines and shipped all of their tooling to Linamar in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Linamar continued on building engines with the Onan branding as well as Identical engines with the Linamar name on them. Thanks to the USA EPA, all of these old technology engines were phased out because it was impossible to make them meet the new regulations. Linamar was allowed to build them to be used for replacement purposes but no manufacturer could buy those engines for their production line products.

The engine you have could be rated at 12.5 or 14 HP. Since it is an OHV engine, it may be still in production and not obsoleted like the valve in block models were. Linamar no longer is involved with Onan, as far as I know. Cummins has complete control of all things Onan when it comes to engines.

If this engine was mine, I would remove the spark plug and then clamp a pair of Vice-Grip pliers to the output shaft and use them to try and rotate the engine a couple of full revolutions. If I got no resistance, then I would conclude that the cylinder wall is free of any rust. If I met with any resistance, then I would stop trying to rotate the crankshaft and I would remove the head to see what is going on inside. Perhaps the bore has a very light coating of rust that could be easily removed with some wet/dry sandpaper in 400 grit.

If you get ahold of Cummins, the SPEC number of that engine MAY indicate if it was made for certain applications or....it it was just a generic build that could easily be adapted to many uses. For more information, GOOGLE this phrase

linamar zx390 service manual.

I would spray some fogging oil or some kind of lubricant into the spark plug holes before I ever tried to turn it over, you could score a new engine.

It is a Linamar copy of the Onan Elite engine.
Parts manual is 965-0202B
Service 965-0764. Both Onan manuals
12.5/14 HP

Thank You for the info guys,I have put oil in the cylinder, and it turns over good.
Thanks for the manual numbers Billy,I am going to look them up.
Thanks again
Ed
I have a person that wants to put it on a air compressor,to replace another 12 horse engine,do you think it would be a good replacement?

I am not good with computers. But if you go to twinslan.net onan. It will bring up a long list of manuals. If that fails go to smokstak and look for
the connection.
