Mulching kit for L X 172 John Deere mower

I have installed a genuine John Deere mulching kit under the 38" deck of my LX 172 mower. My problem is that there is a tremendous amount of the shredded leaves and grass being blown out the left and front sides of the deck as I cut. I am using regular lift John Deere blades and have tried both raising and lowering the discharge grate of the discharge chute and there is still a tremendous amount of stuff blowing out the side and front.

Can anyone tell me how to cure this so the mulched leaves go out the discharge chute instead of being blown out from the front and the left side of the deck. It seems to need some sort of baffling or something to keep it under the deck till it goes out the discharge chute. When I use it, there is so much going out the side and front that I have to run over the leaves and grass a second and sometimes a third time to get the leaves mulched. It does this in wet or dry leaves. Anyone else ever experienced this problem? Thanks. Gene Davis Tennille, Ga.

When you are mowing leaves and grass it likely you will not prevent it from blowing. I have the same problem with my Craftsman, I just go over it a couple times to get it all cleaned up.

I am betting it was almost as dry in Ga as it has been here in NC. The grass is not as thick as normal here, and thick grass is what helps keep the leaves under the deck.

I also don't understand what you mean by your mention of the discharge chute, Most mulch kits I have seen block the discharge chute so leaves can't exit that way and they have to grind up and work their way out from above the blades.

You can try mulching at a notch or so lower than you normally mow (If your yard is obstruction free-you don't want to hit a root or a rock!) And see if that helps.

It has been dry here most of the last 2 months, but we had a few days of rain last week and that made the leaves damp and they did not make as much dust. By discharge chute I mean the place where the grass comes out of the deck when you are mowing normally.

I mulch all my leaves with a 50"deck and regular blades with deflector removed. I go over the yard 3 or 4 times while leaves come down and grind them up. In the spring I lime yard because leaves will sour soil. I never fertilize yard.

I have a full size Agri Fab vacuum rig and that sucks everything up. Now with yours does it help if you go slow and run the deck and engine speed as slow as you can? Most "mulch" blabes have Very aggressive air flow so they stir everything up. Are they really for leaves or just grass . Just trying to think what might help.

I would take the mulch kit off & install some Oregon G5 blades.
Side-discharge with Gator blades; don't use 'em for bagging.
Double cut as necessary.

I do not mulch so I will not advise you on it.

But will give you a word of warning if you have clippings coming out of the front of your mower mulching or not. Always make dang sure that you do not have grass clippings built up around the exhaust on your mower before you put it up. That goes for any rider.

Grass ignited by a hot exhaust caused a good friend to lose over $150,000 in farm machinery and a barn last year..

How are you using a Genuine JD mulch kit and still be using the regular lift blades???? I am betting you just put the screen/shield that covers the discharge chute. That is NOT the entire kit.

The deflector #3 in the parts diagram and the mulch blades are an important part of the kit. Also you need to level the deck differently too. Instead of it being lower in the front you need it to be heeled back just a little. Meaning the rear needs to be flat or just a little lower then the front.

Even with everything in place your going to have dry leaves blow out all over the place as they are ground up under the deck. With the outlet restricted the air flow and material all can not go out the screened outlet.
