Send propelled JD snowblower drive issues

This seemed like the best place to ask this question, I have a JD 826 2 stage snowblower I think it's from the 1980s. It is very hard to put in gear, and I have to forcefully hold it in each gear slot. Then when I pull the "clutch" lever it will barley drive itself. Reverse barley will move and the fastest forward gear just crawls along,. Last year I would have had to run behind it in high gear. I havnt used it in 2 years, just stabilize fuel and start occasionally and change fuel 6 monthly. I've been trying to sell it, but no snow means no one wants to buy. But lots of interest this year. just discovered this problem last night so I havnt done anything with it. And it's too cold to be out with my 2 yr old much today, I just want some ideas on what to check for later tonight. I don't have any knowledge of these types of machines. It has had drips of oil leaking out of it. Is there a transmission fluid in it or is it belt drive?
Thanks for any help.

It uses a "traction wheel drive" system, a rubber-tired wheel is shifted across the face of a disc by the speed/direction control lever.

I would GUESS the parts that slide are gummed up and the rubber has failed on the drive wheel.

Maybe a broken spring, as well.

The lower/back cover drops off pretty easily, so you can see what's going on in that drive mechanism.

You can see a parts breakdown by surfing over to www.jdparts.com, choosing "Previous parts catalog", then enter the model #.

Shifting problems can be traced normally to the Hex shaft that the drive disc slides on. Clean and lube usually fixes the sifting problems. These are the most over looked parts on snow blowers and hardly ever get attention until something happens to them.

The JD Parts site is about useless. Each time that you wish to change from say drive line to engine for example you have t start all over from page one. It can get aggravating to use.

Try this link. It shows where and what type of oil or grease to use when servicing the blower. It may not list you exact model. But most self propelled blowers have used the same setup for as long as I can remember.

Ok, sorry I've been too busy to get back here or work on it much but I did pull the bottom plate off and there was a mouse nest in there. It wasn't really up in the gears and stuff, just on the bottom plate. I can see how it all works now. The rubber clutch drives against a metal disc. It all looks good, just the clutch and metal plate are not coming together enough to move much. I will look at some of the links you guys provided and see if a spring or something is missing or something can be adjusted, when I get a little time to take a look at it. Thanks
