Cub Cadet Hydrostatic Oil Level

I posted this question on the Farm all board a while back and think I have my answer, but I thought I'd post it here too.

Helping a neighbor lady. Her small engine mechanic tells her not to fill the hydrostatic transmission of her 149 Cub Cadet to the plug level on the rear (vertical) side of the case. This would be above the rear axles. Oil level is down as there's a leak somewhere, not sure where. If for some reason this is not the full line, where is it? I see no other plugs, dipstick, etc.

Thank you,
Glenn F.

I have a 149 and several of that series and I am pretty sure its supposed to be brim full to the plug hole. And they don't leak when that full if all the gaskets and seals are good. That said, I have a 129 that has developed a seep somewhere below the pump that i need to address.

If you really want to find that leak, you may have to clean it up good and then fill it up and see where it starts coming out.

There are service manuals out on the internet. You could probably find one at the IHcubcadet.com website.

Yes they should be filled to the level of that plug. The most common source of leaks is either the bypass valves which only leak when running or the cork gasket between the hydro unit and the rear end which leaks running or not. When it goes bad it causes the transmission to leak down to a level below the plug. Its not that hard to change and information is on all the cub cadet sites.

(quoted from post at 07:12:50 11/17/16) the cork gasket between the hydro unit and the rear end which leaks running or not.
Yep this is common, have to drop the hydro/trans and separate them ... fair amount of work involved.
