Onan 16 h.p. Question.

This is a follow up on my previous post. I believe I resolved the electrical issue on my Onan 16 h.p The engine starts and runs good. I ran it for 30+ minutes with no issues of it shutting off or running rough. I do have a question about starting the engine. It seems to start hard when it is cold. The temp. has been in the mid 40's here at night and mid 50's during the day.. I had to turn the engine over a few times before it started. Are Onan engines cold blooded ? Do they flood out easily? I tried not to fully choke the engine to avoid flooding and it still took a few times before it started. The engine starts fine after it is warmed up. Is there a better way to fire up the engine when it is cold. I have 15/40 w. oil in the engine. I thought a splash of gas in the carb. or a squirt of starting fluid when first starting the engine when it is cold. Any thoughts are appreciated. The carb has been cleaned and adjusted and still starts hard.

My 18hp gets full choke when it's cold, fires on third or fourth revolution and get the choke off as soon as it fires, been that way for 36 years. I don't know about my latest project because I haven't gotten it running yet, a 19 hp Onan.

I was told by a Onan Mechanic that a fuel shut off valve would help. Apparently the gas drains back down to the tank if the engine sits for a while. A fuel shut off valve will keep the gas up by the carb. for when the engine is started next time. I guess I'll give it a try and see if it helps.

I use full choke when cold , starts quick ,
Your built in fuel pump may not be working
As it should , check the hose for cracks,
A Briggs & Stratton external fuel pump
Is a low cost fix for weak internal oem pump
