Update on Onan 16 h.p. rough running/shutting off

After doing some further investigation,I narrowed the problem down to electrical. I am going to replace the ignition switch and the voltage sensor for starters. The battery shows a good charge and always did. I ruled out the stator and the rectifier as being defective since the battery maintains a charge. The coil still could be the problem if the engine dies out after getting hot.I will replace the coil if the new ignition switch and voltage sensor don't solve the problem. I also checked the plug wires and replaced the spark plugs, both are good and seem to get good spark. All neutral safety switches are good and I could not detect any shorts in the wiring harness. I plan to clean all the electrical connections and then give it a try. Thanks for everybody's advice from my previous post. I'll let you know how things progress.

(quoted from post at 00:07:44 11/09/16) WHAT is a "voltage sensor"?

(quoted from post at 06:25:11 11/09/16) I think he means the ignition module.

Voltage Relay Sensors are found in Gensets.

Look up Onan part #307-2193

Hope that is not what he needs. Hard to find and the price tags ranges from around $500 and upwards to nearly $1000.00 for one.

The voltage sensor sits up under the dash by the ignition and is just a short wire with a cylinder shaped module connected to the ignition switch. Cost is $26.00 My next step my be replacing the voltage regulator, then the coil and condenser. The cost for those three items is about $150.00. That is why I am starting out to try and replace the cheaper items first in hopes that solves the problem.

It is the ignition Module Billy. It is just labled Voltage sensor on the wiring diagram in the parts manual.

The ignition module is located under the flywheel. The little round thing under the dash is only used to turn the charge light on/off.

The normal failure mode for that module under the flywheel is it just stops working, sometimes it will fail only when hot.

But, it seldom causes a miss, just dead stops. Not always, but usually.

If you need parts google boomers onan parts and contact him. Good guy, good parts, fair prices. No interest., just a customer.
