A couple of gravely questions

I have a I think its a 70's model Commercial 12 gravely with a Kohler motor it doesn't charge it has a new regulator what else can I check to make it work and when you attach the mower deck anyone show me the way it is attached I just had it on the mount spike but it doesn't stay solid lifts when going ahead and drops when backing up

Well the charge part I think I can help. Unplug the plug at the regulator. With the engine running at about the same speed as when you are mowing measure the two outer wires in the plug with you digital meter. You should get like 24 to 26 volts AC out put. If not, you have a fried stator. If you get that voltage then next check is plug the plug back in and test from the center wire to ground and see if you get 14.2. Volts DC. Only 12,2 volts or lower means your regulator is bad. You must have a quick hitch on your machine and I am not familiar with them. ALSO down load the big bad 135 page service book for the Kohler engines. It tells you EVERYTHING you want to know about these engines. It has been posted many times on here. Perhaps someone can link it for you.

Just another note. What blows a lot of these charging systems up is BOZOS hooking the battery charger up backwards after the machine has set all winter. They Really don't like that. Not Toooo expensive but it can be fixed. Watch out with 5he flywheel! You must use the correct puller....watchout for the magnets and pull the fly wheel straight off and gently. Lastly this thing is WAY heavy! Somewhere plus of 20 pounds.

the plug has been cut off and I have separate wires do you happen to know what color the wires would be my regulator has 4 wires and one goes to a ground it is behind the 3 other wires

Of the other 3 wires, 2 should be the same color. They should be coming from the stator under the flywheel. (Kohler now uses white wires from the stator but I don't know what color they would be on yours.)
The third wire will go into the chassis harness. That is your DC output to the battery.

Another thing: I have seen the magnets break loose from the flywheel and stick to the stator. There is a Youtube video by 'Taryl fixes All' It you need to try to glue them back in. If you are fixing it for someone else and guaranteeing it, you may want to look for another flywheel.

Also those magnets go + - + - + -. You can also say N S N S N S. If one pops off you need to be very careful to see how it was origionally glued on. Don't use cheep crap epoxy! As I told you to check with your meter, engine running there will be two wires that give you 24volts AC. Most likely white. If you measure one of the others with the key turned on and the engine not, you will find a +12volt reading and this goes to the center terminal on a standard three t?rminal regulator.

Just thinking why someone would cut off the plug. Then, corrosion or the regulator got fried. Also the stator. There is you answer. Bet everything got toasted with maximum smoke. Just stick a battery tender on it at the end of the day and you will be fine. These things use a full size car battery for goodness sake!
