Scotts 1642 won't/will start

My Scotts 1642 wouldn't start the other day, just a single click whenever I turn the key to "start". I charged the battery thinking that was the problem, no luck, then used a charger/starter with the same result.

I jumped from the battery to the starter and it fired right up, no cranking. Now when I use the key it fires right up. What could the matter be? This tractor does not get a lot of use - maybe once a month tops.

Lately, before this, when I turned the key to start it would sometimes do the click thing then on retry it would pause then crank and start. I assumed it was a weak battery. Now I am not so sure. Undoubtedly it will reoccur and eventually get worse. Bypassing the solenoid seemed like a good idea except now that it starts fine its hard to point the finger at the solenoid. Could failing solenoid behave like this?

I read the thread "Scotts 1642 won't start" but that did not give me any insight.

Usually one of two things. First, the key switch could be going bad. The other is a bad solinoid. If you hear the solinoid make a good CLICK then most likely your key switch is good. Now to test the solinid use a meter or a test lite. Hook the lite up and see weather you get a nice bright light on one of the terminals. This is from the battery. Now with the lite on the other terminal turn the key and see what happens. If you get a nice bright lite and no start you could have a funky starter. If no lite then the solinoid is bad. Simple see what goes and no goes. Get back to us.

It very well could be the solenoid failing.

If it is in an accessible place, try holding your hand on the solenoid when it fails, you should be able to feel it if it is clicking.

Thanks guys. I will run these tests once the tractor starts acting up again and report back with my results.

You will have a transmission neutral safety switch, a PTO safety switch, and a seat safety switch.
The can go bad, wires can fall of or get loose, or the switches can get pushed out of position.
You can find the wiring diagram online at the several John Deere garden tractor related websites.
