Mule Meat

When I was a kid in the mid 70's we had an old tractor that we put "million miles" on playing on it.

It had a 4 speed, Hi/Lo transmission with reverse. The shifter stuck out of the top of the transmission, the rear diff bolted to the transmission much like a modern farm tractor. I remember Dad putting the tires on it from his truck when he bought new ones (15"?).

The input shaft & pulley was on the side of the transmission that ran off of a horizontal (side) shaft engine. I remember Dad replaced the engine with an old Briggs that was much smaller in size than what was on the tractor. He also took and old VW steering box and attached it to the front for steering. We played with the thing year round pulling trailers piled full of kids and sleds in the winter..

I have been searching for nearly 15 years to find a transmission/trans axle like it for a project with the kids. I do not really care about the make or model. I would just like to find one if anyone has any leads. Especially a make or model.

Thanks but that is not it.

It looked more like this old Sears 6 speed. Except with a smaller pulley. It also had two shift levers. One for the 4 speeds/reverse and one Hi/Lo. A diff cover like a truck axle and the axle tubes were like what you see on say an 8N tractor that went all the way out to the brake drums.

Mule meat that is the same transmission that is in my Husqvarna.
Craftmans biggest machine has the same. Mine was only one year 2005.
The Craftman machines were 2005--2009. Thet are black or dark green in
color. On fleabay one of those trannys in the box go for $1000.oo. You
should be able to find one behind someones mower repair shop but they
are not common. In 2005 this machine was around $3,300.oo with the
deck. That is a brute of a tranny and the puller guys grab them up.

PS. Those axles are one inch in diameter so they are tough. That lead on an Economy tractor might be you ticket too but is going to be much harder to find. I ha e never sean them in a yard, only at shows. Good luck.
