Starter Generator question.

Did not want to steal the others guy post on them so started this one. I have an old Koler engine with a starter generator on ti and I wonder it is would have enough power to spin over the Onan engine on my Lincoln welder. The Koler is a single cylinder engine and the Onan is 2 cylinder engine. The welder right now has a pull rope start and it is getting to the point I can not pull it over more then a couple times and if it does not start easy I can not get it to start since I run out of strength to pull it over

It should, considering they use a starter generator on a Cub Low Boy with a 4 cylinder engine. you might have to do a little playing with the driven pulley size though

Kohler K engines have a thing called ACR or Automatic Compression Release. This bit of trickery actually opens the exhaust valve slightly until the starter/gen gets the engine to rotate faster than 500 RPM. Then the ACR allows the exhaust valve to close, thus restoring compression. The momentum of all the spinning parts are able to overcome the compression, draw fuel/air into the cylinder where it can be ignited. The ONAN does not have ACR or anything equal to it. Most likely, your Onan is a CCK Series engine. I suggest that you contact Boomer. He may have all of the correct Onan parts needed to install a proper starter motor on your engine.

Just remember that a "starter generator" is one half of each. If you open up a unit it has one half a start field and one half a generator field. You should get some good advice on here.

Old, I got lucky and my welder/generator(B&S) had a ring gear on the flywheel. Maybe you can find a flywheel with a ring gear..

One thing to remember, though, though, the Onan twin's just-under 50 cubic inch displacement is split between two cylinders, which come up under compression 180? apart, making it easier to crank than a single-cylinder engine of the same displacement.

I recently installed a Briggs/Delco unit on a HARD cranking pre-compression release serial number Wisconsin 8 HP that drives a 2-cylinder Binks air compressor, and was PLEASANTLY surprised at how well it cranks that BEAST.

(Just for the record, the compressor DOES have an unloader for starting.)

Based on this, it wouldn't surprise me if such a starter/generator would crank old's welder, as well.

I have seen some Farmall F series with a ring gear installed behind the clutch on a disc or flex plate from an automatic transmission and a starter mount fabricated to position the starter in the right position. could you do something like this?

The only starter generator Onan used. That I know of. Bolted to the front of the engine. But they are rare to find today. To add a automotive starter. You would have to swap the flywheel and oil pan.

That would be real hard ot do but a simple belt drive starter generator set up would be easy to do just by pulling the rope start part off and then installing a large pulley in its place.

Didn't those yellowish Sears garden tractors from around 1970 have about a 16 horse Onan 2 cyl. on them? Must be some of them in the junk some where with starter parts.

I've had this Lincoln welder now for over 20 years and have yet to find any other engine like it in all the places I have been

I'll have to get it uncovered. It is sitting out in the machine shed under a tarp and it has been that way for probably 10 years now. When I can get it started it runs real good but any more my back and shoulder does not like me pulling on he starter rope

Old, if you can put a vee belt pulley on it you can use any starter that you can add a vee pulley to. Just rig a pivot frame, add a battery and a starter button. I've seen this done on Cats with pony engines. I've even seen one with a 115V starter! Most had a handle to tighten the belt while starting and then when you loosened it up the belt would come off and be stored out of the way.

Cheap and simple.

We had a similar welder at work and a quick trip to the car junk yard cured that problem. As I recall a "B" belt was used and the addition did a good job

Yep and that is why I have not started this Lincoln in so long. I like how it welds being it is a DC machine but pulling on that rope is not fun

I used my garden tractor to start an old Toro rotary mower using a long V belt. I have a picture somewhere. Hal
