K301 rebuild

My first rebuild, bought whole cub 126 with disassy k301 for 80 bucks. Cleaned and painted, lapped valve seats, honed the bore, measured, bore is stock size. Started assy, the main bearing in the block just falls into place. The race was smooth, no damage. It was disassy because of a spun rod bearing. I have purchased another crank already. WHAT am I missing here. Have the manual, shows pressing in the bearing.

What you are seeing is probably normal. Those big ball bearings are often not a real tight fit in the engine block.

You could experiment with some shim stock and find the thickness
needed to make a good press fit. Or else use some loktite sleeve
retainer, but the shim stock would be a more permanent fix.

I haven't had one of them apart in years but I'm pretty sure I've seen them from super tight to loose. If your worried about it, clean the surface with brake clean and use something like Loctite shaft/bearing mount.

Unless the bearing spun in the block its probably normal. Best I remember, it doesn't take much to get that bearing in there and I am thinking it presses onto the crank. If you are worried about it, put a few drops of red loctite on it. Just remember to get it apart next time you will probably have to heat it. You have a manual, don't you? You can probably find it on Kohlerplus.com

I wouldn't want to depend on shim stock staying in place and wouldn't want it floating around if it came out. Probably the shim would only need to be .001 or .002" and that isn't too easy to deal with in a press fit. If it was .010" or so (which I am sure it isn't) it might be ridged enough to depend on staying while you pressed it together.
