Need advice on old Kohler engine

I have a 14 HP Kohler engine in my old Troy- Bilt tractor (1980's ?) Problem: Engine runs fine without the voltage regulator 3 wire connector attached. When attached it will blow fuse in electric circuit. Center pin putting out proper voltage. However, with engine running, other two outside pins show no voltage. Can a wire from the stator or stator itself be shorting out? Don't want to pull flywheel until I get your advice. Thanks in advance. Sam

The center pin can't be putting out the proper voltage if there is no voltage at the outside pins. The outside wires that come from the stator put
out AC voltage. Sounds like your rectifier or voltage regulator is bad. Put your volt meter on AC and connect to the two wires comming from the stator and see what you have. Should read 28 to 32 volts AC.

Golfcartman: Your help was very much appreciated. After setting my meter on the right AC setting, voltages all read out okay! So, I took another used voltage regulator, and everything worked fine. But, this will go down in my records as very mysterious, since it would blow 30 amp line fuse when old regulator was plugged in. It made no sense & still doesn't. Possibly while tracing down & moving wire harnesses, I moved a shorted out wire that I never did find! Ah, but all is well for now! Thanks to everybody that responded. Sam

Glad it worked out for you. Your old voltage regulator may have been shorted out inside. May never know, at least you are up and going now.

Glad you got it going.

I had my Kohler voltage regulator go bad on my wheel horse so I tried putting on a B&S voltage regulator and it's been working fine now for
over a year.
