Cub 169 repower

I am not an expert on those small tractors, so sorry for asking obvious things.

I got a 169 with a broken block. I have a hard time to find a motor for it, but it seems that there are plenty of K341 motors from JD 300, 216, 316... Would those work fine?

Would any K341 interchange? I need to be ablt to reinstall the hydro shaft on the back and the manually engaged clutch on the front.

and then, If I go with a smaller Kohler, K321 or K301 would another one from a cub cadet bolt right on, and allow installation of the front clutch and hydrostatic drive?

fdt860:

When Kohler makes an engine, they start with a "base model". From there, anyone (equipment manufacturer) can go to them and request and specify something they want or like. Thus, there is a "specification" number attached to the base model so Kohler knows what changes, alterations, or amendments they made for that OEM.

With that in mind, the K-341 is the base model and several hundred "spec" numbers attached to it.

Cub Cadet has their own "spec" numbers, and thus it would be wise to find a replacement engine that is spec'd for Cub Cadet.

You will have less pain and head ache trying to fit some other's OEM spec'd engine into a Cub Cadet.

A K321 would definitely bolt right in from another cub. More than likely a JD K341 would work as well. Less likely that Kohler changed the motor mount/front clutch/driveshaft mounting pattern just to suit different tractors. Just double-check all of the mounting patterns.

A K321 from another older cub would fit without issue. The shaft sizes are the same so reusing the PTO clutch wouldn't be an issue. I don't know if you can use one from a Quietline though.

The biggest issue with using one from another application (John Deere) is the size and length of the drive shaft - most of the rest you can take off your blown K341 (oil pan and tin work).

Any narrow base K341 block will fit, then there are the crank variations. You may have to piece an engine together. I think a JD engine will
physically fit, but something on the PTO end keeps the PTO clutch from fitting. Never swapped one, so don't know for sure. A 169 is a
fairly rare Cadet, so I wouldn't advise butchering it.

BS does that too. I have a push type DR trimmer with an 8.25 engine and just bought a tow behind (a lawnmower) fence/pond bank mower with a
6.25. I wanted the lighter engine on the push mower and vise versa. Went online to find the respective mounting bolt dimensions and found just
what you said about base then add ons.

I finished the changeover yesterday and I am real pleased with the results. They have cutters for mowers, ATVs and 3pt. I wanted the mower
attachment and now I can go down my pond banks with my mower (studded ATV tires) on hard ground while my mower is off to one side, running
in the rough and getting the weeds. Being a string trimmer, it is impervious to things that would stop a blade and if you come to a tree, like a
fence post, it just swings back out of the way, clears the obstruction and returns to cutting position......unlike a sickle bar.
