I have 2007 cub cadet 1045 , has been leaking oil, look like is coming from front seal. any body knows if that is case and does anybody know how difficult is to replace it? tractor work okay as long as add oli every so often.thanks

You call it 'front seal' but I am thinking you mean the valve cover gasket if its dripping down on the muffler.

By all means, replace it. Its not that hard. Be sure the bolts are really tight or it will leak again.

A seal is used to keep an engine from leaking around the crankshaft.

Whatever it takes to fix the leak is better than letting it leak!

Any oil leak on an air cooled engine will have the potential to accumulate enough dirt to prevent proper air circulation, dramatically shortening the engines life!

thanks T.R.K, any instruction how is done?

if is valve cover casket and dripping down on the muffler. should be smoke and burning oil when I mowing. and if valve cover why is leaking when is setting not when is operating?
thanks

Well, I am thinking your mower has a Kohler Courage engine.

You take the top cover off the engine and you may also have to remove some shielding around the muffler to get access to the seven 10mm head bolts that hold the valve cover on the cylinder head.

You remove the cover and clean off any old gasket material from the valve cover and the cylinder head flange using a suitable scraper, then install a new gasket. I usually stick two bolts through the cover and place the gasket on them, then put the whole mess back on the cylinder head. Sometimes you have to use a small screwdriver to align the gasket so the bolts go through them.

Be sure the bolts are rather tight as you have to really compress the cork-like material of the gasket to get it to seal the oil in.

Then reinstall any covers to complete the repair.

Kohler 20 hp Courage engine? If So..

Valve cover gasket.

Very common problem with them and I have replaced a bunch of them on Cub riders. You can buy a new gasket alone or get the kit that includes the gasket and a new valve cover. Some come with an oil deflector that is suppose to direct the oil back toward the oil drain holes.

It is aggravating to start the engine and have to wait a few minutes for the oil to burn off of the exhaust before you can mow with the tractor.

Do not see an edit button..

Just wanted to add. Once you clean the head and valve cover.

Apply a small amount of [b:90318043ce]Permatex Indian Head Gasket Shellac[/b:90318043ce] to the parts before you place the gasket on the cover. Indian Head is like a glue that will hold just about any gasket in place and bonds the gasket to the parts. And it will not leak.

Most of the leaks I have saw from the valve covers did not leak once the engine was warmed up. I am thinking that the metal expanding once hot seals the gaskets. Then once it cools a small gap opens up between the gasket and metal allowing what oil is trapped to leak out.

Cork gaskets do a fine job at compressing but do not expand worth a hoot. The same can be said about some cheap rubber gaskets that become hard and brittle over time.
