Will I got the Case 444 14hp running and painted and after running it around , now the hood shows a heat burn from the muffler being to close ... if I move it over the other direction ,it wouldn't put the exhaust out where the hood has a place for the tail pipe to be ... { hope this makes since } ..
Been looking on the enter-net and haven't found anything for the Case 444 kohler 14hp ... Does anyone know where I can get a muffler ??

THANKS ............... mark

More than likely, your muffler is rotted out underneath the outer cover. When this happens, the end of the muffler (usually on the right side) heats up and causes the paint on the hood to burn and the decal turns brown. Replacing the muffler is the only option I am aware of but CASE mufflers are not inexpensive to buy. The link below will take you to Brian Hildreth's website. It looks to me that you own an early 1978 444. Give Brian the PIN off your ID tag so he can find the correct muffler for you.

There are also special heat resistant foils that can be glued to the underside of your hood to provide additional protection but none of those will overcome a badly leaking muffler.

Tom ,
BOY you hit it right on the head ... just like you said ... right side paint burnet and decal starting to bubble .. So back to the sandblaster with the hood and a redo ... after I get a better muffler ... I'm going to put a heat shield on the hood where the end of the muffler is now .. see if it helps ..

Mark, l sold a nice 444 muffler earlier this year. If memory serves me right, underneath the sheetmetal jacket on the outside, the muffler was wrapped with a sheet of high heat insulation. This directs most of the heat to the exhaust air flow, anx minimizes radiant heat transfer through the muffler shell. On most of the older mufflers, the sheet metal has rusted out and the insulation is gone. I believe that a new muffler will have the insulation and sheet metal jacket. You could fabricate this setup if you have a good muffler shell.
