John Deere 314 Replacing a Kohler 14hp with a Kohler 16hp

Hello everyone,
I may have asked this question before, but will ask again. Will a Kohler K341 16hp engine fit in a John Deere 314 that has the Kohler K321 14hp? I have a good 16hp engine and the 14hp threw a rod and busted a hole in the block? If it will fit what modifications if any will I have to do?
Thanks,
Jack

It will bolt in but the output shaft for the pto end will likely be differant. You may need to swap the crankshaft if it isnt damaged

Hard to say without knowing the source (spec nbr) of the replacement. The areas that vary most are the oil base and block configuration where it bolts in place. There are at least 4 different ones that I've encountered. That and the crank length and diameter already mentioned are the areas you need to examine and measure.

Some used mounts direct to to the block, others mount to the oil base. If those areas look the same, it will fit. You may be able to swap oil bases, IF the blocks are compatible.

You can also down load that Kohler engine book that a lot of folks have posted. Has the codes in the front and you can look up your engines. Shaft size can be turned down by a good machinist. Couple of different pans that bolt on. Deep oil level and shallow oil level, Etc. Give it a try and get back to us.

I had an Allis Chalmers 416 with a K341 16 hp engine that blew. My neighbor gave me an Allis 414 with a K321 engine. It was a direct bolt in exchange. I don't remember if the crankshaft size was the same or not. I believe I just left the clutch on the donor engine and ran it. I think I remember right, there were some Kohler crankshaft output diameters that were different if it was originally in a Cub Cadet or a Deere or some other brand machine.

I think all the K series blocks from 10-16 are interchangable as far as the oil pan goes, and the crankshafts are the same internally, its just that the output shafts were milled to differant applications so you cant, for example, put a Ford PTO on a JD block... you would need the JD pto or you could put the Ford crankshaft into the JD block, which I have done, PITA but it worked.

The blocks bolt down the same and have the same crankshaft height between the K341 and K321. However the 341 has one more headbolt.

The attached photo shows 3 of the block variations on K series engines. Even JD used two different blocks in 200 and 300 machines.

Forgot to add: there are also different drilling for the PTO clutch mount . At least two that I know of, but no pics of those.
