Massey Ferguson Lawn Mowers

Hey I was wondering what the opinions are on the old Massey Ferguson lawnmowers? I would like to buy one. (7,8, 10), etc. I want to use it as a starter lawnmower to mow a smaller yard, and also restore it at some point. I have been searching Craigslist and have seen a few but not many close by.

Are they decent mowers? I know they are much much cheaper than the Oliver lawnmowers, and I like the look of the Massey Ferguson lawnmowers anyways. If I just get the mower, is it easy to get a deck for one?

Thanks for all the advice in advance.

I had (have) a MF7 that was repowered with an 8 Hp Briggs. Right after I got it running I did cut grass with it and it did o.k. for a 32" mower. This was in the early 2000s.

There is (or was)a yahoo forum dedicated to them and those guys sure were helpful.

I did find that I was pretty much on my own for repair parts and had to be creative sometimes. For instance, when I quit mowing with it one end of the deck driveshaft had a nail in it to drive the gearbox because the splines inside had stripped.

My recommendation is to look for a good later model rider to use as your primary mower and then get a Massey lawn mower if you just want to restore one.

IMO if you looking for something to cut grass during the week and show on the weekend, start with a MF10 or MF12. 12's come in a hydro version and ran pretty late into production, so they had some safety switches in the later years. Only thing with the 7-8-10-12 is that they have Tecumseh engines. I like them personally because they are easy to work on for me, but parts can be a bit of a bear due to Tecumseh no longer in business.
I mowed with a MF10 for a bunch of years. Never really realized how long it took me to cut my grass til I picked up a MF16. Hydro drive and Hydro lift with the option of a light 3 point hitch. Thats movin' up!

Between the 7-8-10-12-14-16 I have 13 of them. Yeah, I like'em. But no speed demons thats for sure. They've pretty much been relegated to show duty as the zero turn gets the mowing duty. Faster and better cut with the faster tip speed on the blades.

The 7s and 8s sold at the dealer I worked for were mostly hydros as that's what the owner liked. Those had a two blade 34 inch deck. The 10 and 12 models had a three blade deck so they did not need the timed gearbox shafts like the 34 deck needed. Both decks had a full roller across the rear, and did a good job if set up correctly.

It will be a very small lawn and I will probably have a push mower for backup honestly. They just seem pretty affordable and we have a Massey Ferguson 1080 on the farm, which it would match perfectly. Good to know about the engine parts being hard to get at times.

We currently mow the farm yard with a John Deere 210 and we mow very slow with it. This lawnmower would be mowing a much smaller yard, and I assume it would be able to mow at a similar speed.

That is quite the collection! Where are you at?

Thank you I will look up the forum for them. And like I said above I will have a push mower for backup. The yard will be pretty small so I don't expect it to be an issue.

My dad had a MF 10 for a lot of years, with a variable speed belt drive. My opinion is it doesn't turn very short and you sit a bit awkwardly (foot position).
