I stored our Honda 3813 mower in the barn years ago when it was too small for our lawn. I now need to get it going. But here is the problem: Although I have had it running briefly (seconds), it draw through the exhaust and pumps out the carb when turning over on the starter! It does this intermittently with the brief running periods mentioned above. It is as the cam timing is off. I took the valve cover off and the valves are free and not stuck. I also pulled the timing belt shroud back and found the bolt on the center of the cam sprocket not tight. What baffles me is how it could possibly get out of time, then get back in time. The cam timing appears roughly correct when I get a piston at TDC. All comments appreciated.

Could the valves have been adjusted at the wrong position of the piston? I think they are adjusted at tdc of the compression stroke? May not be the timing belt at all?

My guess is your timing belt is slipping all the time. But for brief periods its close enough the engine fires a few times.

I have never had one of those apart, but I have seen several with timing belt issues and given quotes on replacing the timing belt several times. Usually when I give the customer a quote on replacing the timing belt, it is pretty high because you have to pull the engine because the drive shaft goes in a hub on the timing belt end of the engine, And of course you have to deal with the radiator one way or another, they pick up the mower and I never see it or them again.

I think TRK is correct. When I initially looked at valve timing it looked OK, but when I revisited today, it was not. Timing belt looks OK from what I can see, but that is not definitive by any means. I will bite the bullet and take it apart. Any hope of finding a belt given the age of the machine? I hate to give up on it, as it is good shape otherwise and great little mower. Thanks to both.

should be able to get parts.... I just did a search on ht3813 and up came honda lawn parts... I drilled down and found timing
belt.... I know my son did some work on my neighbors ht3813 a couple years ago and easily found parts on the internet.
