Honda Push Mower

Hello,

Any one know what is the valve setting for a Honda push mower 5hp engine?
They are now at .012 on the intake, and .017 on the exhaust. It has only 25# of compression. Hoping the valves are way off!

To be of any real help to you we need to know which Honda engine you have on your mower, the clearances that you quote do seem to be rather wide.

Hello,

I took a second look, after it got cooler. Spits out the carb when it fires. I got a burned intake valve, going
to the junk heap. Thanks for the link.......

I would suspect a sticky valve or carbon chip on the seat rather than burned. I don't think I've ever encountered a truly burned intake on a small engine.

It's worth some cleaning attempts before the trash can.

Have you tried a different plug? Had that happen, a weak plug would not fire on compression but would fire on the overlap, make it pop out the intake.

Hello Steve@advance,

I did not bother with the plug after I took a compression test. Valves were loose at .o12 on the intake and and .o17 for the exhaust. I set them at .006 and .010, closer to the right gap, no luck. Compression went up 10# after I squirted some oil in the plug hole. It has been very Hard to start for awhile I was told. I did not have much time and it was brutally hot. I'll play with it later, new one coming.........

Hello ken kombs,

I have seen my share of burned valves, unusually exhaust though. Valve is traveling fully, I idjusted it to .006 which turns out is very close to .015mm. That is what it supposed to be set at, no change in the compression. I may try to dislodge any corbon built up by removing the valve spring. Way too much work to split the block. A new one is coming so I may just try the valve thing, or just put it out at the curb. Many projects are waiting, and it has been hot for a week now........
