Kohler in Ariens ZTR

I was given an Ariens Zoom ZTR with a Kohler Command 21 model CV23S. The engine leaks oil from the top main seal. I removed the flywheel & the
horseshoes on the ignition modules are beat up from flywheel contact. I believe the top main bearing or crankcase housing is bad. Is this a
throwaway engine or is it worth repairing? Mower has 450 hours on the meter & I believe it was working. Thanks. Sonny

While the Command series is the best Kohler makes and among the best small engines made by any manufacturer, If the bearing is so loose that the flywheel is hitting the poles on the stator, you need a new engine.

I bet the clutch is gone too. When a clutch winding shorts out sometimes the easiest path to ground is through the engine. It finds a ground through the crank and main bearings and can erode them by arcing to the point the whole crankcase is junk.

Sounds like that one has about run it's course...

What do you have planned for the mower?

If it's for home use, might consider a Briggs repower. Check the shaft diameter, look on Ebay, that will get you going about 1/2 the price of replacing the Kohler.

I have a chance to pick up a B&S 22 HP in a Craftsman. Unfortunately it has to go on the back burner for now due to other priorities. Hope the crankshaft measurements work. Sonny
