Allis 918H - how do you add oil to the hydrostatic

Need to check and possibly add oil to the hydrostatic transmission in my Allis 918H. Is there a dip stick?? Where is the filler plug? How do you know it has enough? I have a manual for an older machine but it doesn't say much. Thanks.

I asked the same question a couple of weeks ago at my local mower repair joint. He kinda chuckled and said you can....after you remove the tranny from the machine and turn it upside down. Next take out all of the bolts. Then you need to know how much fluid to put back in. Most all of them are 700 hour throw always. Another problem is the axles. Lots of these machines, while you are mowing, drop their cookies and the left wheel falls off!!! They have a 3/4 inch axle that can flex. You get metal fatigue. There is a guy on Fleabay selling new super strong axle replacements that have the correct temper. My big Husqvarna six speed has a ONE inch axle. Much better. Let us see what others have to say!

I am going to say this from 15 years ago. At the rear you will see a vent on the left side, on top of a 90deg elbow, you pull the vent up with your finger nail and add oil(ATF type F)to the 90 degree plug on the right side. Add oil till you can t add anymore, you must pull up on the vent to let the air out. This is a pain to do but it must have been a cheap way to build it. I have had a 712,718,720,and the best mowing machine I ever had, a 2025.

jeffcat, you are talking about the low end lawn tractors that they are selling today.

The 916H is a garden tractor made in the 80's and was a much heavier built unit. The hydro is serviceable and it's covered in the 900 Series Operators Manual.

andy r, you can find that manual here: http://gardentractortalk.com/forums/files/file/4204-allis-chalmers-900-series-operators-manual/

You may have to register on the forum to download it, but it would be worth it. They also have the 900 Series Service Manual which would be good for you to have.

Well then that Allis is more like my Cub Cadet 1330 and that can be serviced. Trouble is you need to take the whole seat, fenders, and everything else off to get at it. There is a little resivour on the left side and that is where the fluid goes. I had to flush it out with ATF fluid a couple of times and then put in the correct stuff. Only holds a little more than 1/2 quart.

The were one of the best ever made! I bought a new 918H in 1997 and used it to mow 3 acres, only one belt and a few new blades in all that time. The spindle bearings were never changed. I also have a 38 year old 1978 716H that used to mow the same 3 acres, only keep the tiller on it now but still have the good deck for it. The K341 on the 716 was rebuilt once and the CH18 on the 918 was never tuched in 17 years! No problems with either hydro but did change filters and fluid as recommended. I wish they stilll made them.
