starting question

When I start my 74 AMF cold it the starter engages right away. When it is hot and I go to restart it I will at first get nothing when I turn the key, then when I turn it off and on one or two times it will start. So it doesn't like being started hot for some reason. Could this be the solenoid that is connected to the starter or the starter itself?

My guess would be the solenoid. You can test it with a test light. Next time its hot, put your test light on the post at the starter. Or on the large post with the wire that goes to the starter, whichever is easier to get to.

If the engine doesn't start but the light burns, its the starter. Or else the engine can't turn over because of too much compression.

If the solenoid clicks and you don't get a light, its the solenoid. The coil is moving the plunger but the contacts aren't making.

If no click, then put your test light on the small post on the solenoid and see if you get a light there.

If no light there, its usually a safety switch not making but may be the ignition switch (or any of the wiring involved).

If 2 small posts, You will have to check both, One will be the ground for the winding and most times it involves the safety switches too.

Ok I'll check it all, still seems odd that it only happens hot, when cold and I turn the key it turns over right away.

I have a few old Cub's with Briggs engines that does it. Starts fine when cold, but once hot I may have to turn the switch on and off two or three times to get them to turn over.

Installed new solenoids, starters and batteries. Still the same. I just learned to live with it.
