AC 914 Shuttle Transmission trouble

Hey everyone. I'm new to this site and looking for some help.
I've got an Allis Chalmers 914 shuttle garden tractor and I'm having some transmission issues. It's a 4 speed and it started with there being no neutral. When in the neutral position it would still creep along. When the tractor was turned off there was no "free wheel". It also wouldn't shift into 3rd or 4th gear.
Now, It won't shift at all and won't go back into neutral.
It's a great little tractor and I don't want to scrap it. Any/all help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome Lad!

I can't give hands on experience with that model, but it's probably like most all other hydrostats.

There will likely be a lever attached to a shaft on the hydrostat. The linkage that moves the lever is tied into the brake pedal, and when adjusted properly will center the lever in the neutral position. Though it is possible for the problem to be inside the hydro, it is more likely to be in the external linkage.

The best way to diagnose it is to move the shifter and watch what is happening. Possibly the brake is not fully returning and has the shifter locked in neutral. Look for a missing spring, loose bolt, jammed with grass, etc. Once you find the problem, jack the rear wheels off the ground, start it up, adjust the linkage to get neutral, forward, and reverse.

It is normal to not have freewheel in neutral. To get freewheel, most have a separate lever to open a diverter valve inside the hydro.

Sounds like something has come loose in the shifting mechanism you'll probably going to have to tear into it.You can go to simpletractors to get some expert opinions on it.
