Gravely Super Convertible Starting Question

I have an L Super Convertible which I recently bought. The gravely "BUG" got me really bad. I have since had the Mag professionally rebuilt and have great spark, carb rebuilt and new pos and neg cables, starter switch and battery.

I replaced the Mag and timed it to what I have read on line.

Now, when I try and start, it cranks and cranks and cranks and then slowly starts, as though its building up energy.

I know I am missing something, and probably in the timing, but I just keep kicking myself for knot knowing. Any help in this would be great.

Love these old machines, its just the first time I begin digging into one.

Check the compression. Could be a tight valve, leaking valve, head gasket. Bad rings would be accompanied by excess blow-by.
