check valve for gas line

I have 3 Case garden tractors with the tank under the seat. When I try to start them,it seems the gas has to be pumped that distance for a long time to get them to start. After the initial start of the day, they will start right up depending on how long between startups. Does anyone know of a check valve to put in the gas line or another solution to the problem?

If you want function over originality, simply ditch the OEM mech fuel pump and install a low pressure electric pump.

After they sit unused for a bit, turn the key on and let the pump run a few seconds before cranking, and they'll pop right off.

I have a couple of DEERE 318's that have mech pumps and a 322 and a 400 with electric pumps (from the factory) and the electric ones are sure nicer. A friend with a 300 had the mech pump fail and we replaced it with an elecric. He really liked the difference in starting.

Dave, What I have done on an old Briggs engine that was supposed to have a line with a check valve in it as the tank is under the carb. I just put a "S" bend in the line and I have no trouble with gas going back to tank anymore. Hope this helps and hope you have room for the bend. Good Luck. Maybe I'll see you at Neversink this year.

I do not see the fuel pump actually being the issue here unless the pump itself is bad.

The carb should hold enough fuel in the bowl to run the engine long enough for fuel to be pumped to it.

To your question. Check valves can be gotten at most auto parts stores. I have one here that came from NAPA Part #[b:654c4848f0]AFP CV8000[/b:654c4848f0] . It is a universal type that has threaded female ends. Which is not problem. Just need to buy the male threaded hose barbs to make it work.

I thought it should hold enough gas to at least get it to fire and maybe sputter, which would pump enough gas to keep them running, but all three are the same, and one is an Onan engine. Admittedly, with three of them they don't get run often. I'll have to dig a little deeper. maybe get one check valve and see if it helps one tractor Thanks guys

The newer Onan engine have external pump verses the integral pump
In the carb , I think Briggs and Stratton has replacement external fuel pump
for low cost , try those , here are some part numbers for the Briggs pump
491922 , 808656 , 691034 , 808492 , on eBay less than $10.00
