oil for 16G with Kohler

Machine has about 1000 hrs on it. I have used straight 30wt, but I have heard that 15-40 (which I use on other things here) is actually the
thing to use, that oil development has gotten so good, that one should take advantage of the multi-viscosity. Any thoughts out there?

Thanks

Cliff

I would take a look at what has worked good for 1000 hrs why mess with success? You didn't which Kohler they have about a 1000 different e3ngine model and have no idea what 16G is either, you can go to the Kohler website enter your model number and down load an owners manual and a service manual and they probably will recommend 30 wt.

I have a 1971 Wards tractor and I use 30wt oil year round. It's never been rebuilt and doesn't smoke or use oil. I use a dip stick heater when it's real cold. Hal

Do you blow snow with this? Just wondering if you were using it in very cold weather.

If you are mainly using it above 32 degrees, why don't you stick with 30 wt oil?

Briggs, Kohler and Kawasaki oil still has the zinc in it which the small engines like.

I have a 1992 Gravely 16G Pro with a Kohler M18 Magnum engine.

All I have ever used in it is Castrol GTX 10W30 from the first oil change. Fact is Castrol GTX 10W30 is the only oil I have ever used in all of my small equipment and autos.

No I do not blow snow with it. Snow is moved with a blade. The tractor is used year round. and has been out in everything from the high 90's to -15F here in WV.

10W30.. When Cold (0 degrees F) it flows like a 10 weight oil and once warmed up to operating temps it flows like a 30 weight.

Yes that is how multi-viscosity engine oils actually work.

I have used Castrol GTX oil ever since I have been old enough to buy oil and have no plans to change for it has never failed me.

Kohler cautions against using multiweight in the summer because it might cause excessive oil burning - something that makes little sense to me. If you don't get excessive oil burning I don't know of any reason why a quality multiweight could not be used. Biggest issue is keeping the oil clean. I usually change mine (K301S and a K321) at the beginning of summer, mid summer and end of summer - then I also use Castrol 30W or Mobil 1 10W30 synthetic for winter use. Given the small amount of oil it takes to refill one of these engines it seems like cheap insurance.

Zinc is only needed on flat tappet engines with heavy valve springs - hardly an issue with a Kohler considering how long similar engines ran on nondetergent 30W that had no additive package.
