salvage yards

I have a cm274 NH front mount commercial mower . I need a driveshaft for it . I only need one end but it is only sold as a complete unit. I would just buy it but they want over $700 for this shaft that is about 7-8" long. Does anyone know of any salvage yards that has this kind of equipment or any other ideas where I might find the end I need which is the end that bolts to the engine flywheel . Thanks for any help

The question here is whether the end of the shaft is proprietary OR.... it is an item that was already in production prior to it being used on your tractor. If you are in ...or close to.. a large city, then you should take that shaft to people who are engaged in the Power Transmission business. They handle things such as gearboxes, belts, bearings, pulleys, U-Joints and so forth. If you are lucky, they will recognize the key item and source it for you. At that point, you can take that item and your damaged shaft to a good machine shop. They will be able to rebuild your shaft. Total cost will be a fraction of the outrageous price your dealer is forced to charge you by the manufacturer.

I know that the drive shaft is sold as a complete unit and as you stated. They are expensive no matter where you look.

It has two universal joints. One on the flange that bolts to the flywheel, and one on the coupler that slides on the transmission shaft. What is bad? The flange itself or the U-Joint?

If it is the U-joints (pressed and held in place by snap rings much like on a lot of cars). Can you remove one and maybe try having an auto parts store match one up?

I looked at several used NH mowers of that type a year ago and all of them either had bad drive shafts or newer replacements fitted, that tells me it's a common problem and your chances at a parts yard are slim. To answer your question I dont know of a used parts yard that specializes in NH yard and garden.
As Tom said it might be an off the shelf flange but per my memory it looked to be a NH specific part. What's wrong with yours? a trip to a machine shop might be in order?

One of the ears is about a third wore off. My parts man is gonna dig in is piles and see if he can find one . I may get lucky. It does fit on some GTs but sold as units with parts I wouldn't need. He found one application for $300 plus with parts I don't need, just don't want to do that to get what should be a $40-$50 part

Again back to looking at automotive drive line parts.

Measure your flange and look at Flanges used on cars and trucks.. Many of them use flange couplers on the Transmission, Transfer case or Rear axle..

Example of what to check into and maybe consider.

These examples were found at Northern Driveline LLC.
