wiring of headlights on 74 AMF lawn tractor

I am trying to get the headlights working on this 74 AMF lawn tractor. I put in new lamps already. One wire comes from the lights to a pull switch mounted on the dash (see pic). There is a black wire coming off the lights as well which right now is not connected to anything (see pic), is this wire for power or ground? There is also a wire coming from the starter which goes to the dash switch (see pic). So, the pull switch has one wire going to the lights, and another going to the starter, and there is a black wire coming off the lights that is disconnected. Any thoughts appreciated, I'm a newbie at this. I can't figure out why one of the wires is going to the starter.

The wire doesn't go "to the starter".
It goes to a bracket attached to the starter that likely has a fuseholder and a terminal in it, that the two wires attach to.
Wires from the stator under the flywheel attach to the other side, one from the battery charging winding, and one from the winding that powers the headlights.
If you post the B/S model number, likely someone can give you more precise details, as it's been a long time since I've worked on one that old.
Here's the basics of what I think you have:

Yes I should have been more clear, it's a bracket next to the starter. So from the pull switch on the dash then one wire goes to the bracket terminal (#8 on the diagram you attached), t.hen the other wire from the pull switch goes to the lights which makes sense. Would the black wire coming from my lights then go to a ground? Right now it isn't attached to anything. If I do hook that black wire up to ground, and the lights still don't work, what should I check next? My motor model number is 191707-0674. Thanks for the reply.

Sounds right.

Check for AC voltage across the two terminals on each light with the engine running.
