Looking for carb for BS

Here is a picture of the carb, I would like to either get a replacement carb or a rebuild kit. I called B&S and they said I would have to go to an antique dealer because they don't stock parts for a carb this old. If anyone has a lead I would appreciate it. I have also included a picture of the model number, etc., of the engine itself. I did locate the manuals online, the part number for a replacement carb is 390411 and a rebuild kit is 299852. I also notice that sometimes fuel drips out of the opening which points down, it looks like a hose is supposed to be attached there, can anyone tell me what is missing there? Thanks.

No hose attaches at that spot and about the only way to stop that version carb from leaking is to put a fuel shutoff valve in the fuel line. here's another place to get carb kits and you can check e bay also

I think I found a kit on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-REPLACEMENT-BRIGGS-STRATTON-CARBURETOR-CARB-REBUILD-KIT-299852-394698-/201603364602?hash=item2ef07f36fa:g:puEAAOxy4YdTSEZh I just hope it's the right one. Thanks for letting me know there is no hose which needs to attach to that outlet. One thing I forgot to mention, and very odd, the mower runs good overall but when I turn left in second gear it wants to stall. As soon as I straighten the wheel it revs up again. If I am in first gear it doesn't do it. Very strange.

Soulds like it could be a saftey switch or there is a bare wire that is making contact when in 2nd gear and you turn

Another thought, is there a more modern carb that could replace this one without too much modification to any of the throttle/choke connections, etc? I have ordered a carb kit but thought I would explore this too.

in a word NO, actually those carbs are pretty good even when badly worn the engines will run fairly well, only thing is they tend to leak at the needle & seat no big deal install a fuel shutoff valve in line nice to have anyway makes it so easy to change the fuel filter.

Well success, I got the carb kit yesterday and put it in. First time doing a carb, I found a video on YouTube with a demonstration on how to rebuild Flo Jet carbs which helped a lot.

The main jet in the centre was badly seized, and someone previously had tried to remove it and stripped the screw slot badly. I had to carefully drill a slot in the center, and grind one of my screwdrivers to fit, and I was able to get it out without damaging the threads on the carb. The float was also full of gas and I didn't have a new one, I drilled two small holes in it to blow out the fuel then resealed the holes with JB Weld. I may end up getting a new float but at least for now it is running well.

Good to hear you got it going, but you better find a float JB weld will not hold for very long the gas will get to it eventually

Correct me if I am wrong.

I am thinking that the same Briggs carb fits engines from 8 hp up to about 16 hp. I have two older Cub Cadets that have 11 and 12hp engines and they both have the same carb.
