Hi all, great looking site here. I just picked up a 1974 AMF lawn tractor, model 1281-1500, has a B&S motor. I have attached a photo of the ID plate located on the back of the tractor.

It runs and cuts grass, but as with most 42 year old machines it could use some TLC and I may do some restoration work on it over the winter.

Anyone have a link to where I could get a service manual, etc? I couldn't find one for that model online. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I had a 1974 AMF 1414 back in '74. The thing was literally a beast and it worked and worked 8 acres for me. It had a 14 horse Briggs and was fully hydrostatic foot pedal controlled with a hydro lift lever on the dash. I had the 48" aluminum mower deck, snow/dirt blade and the massive tiller. Unlike most other hydros, it had valving in the transmission which would not let it roll down hills or let the tiller push it forward. Wish I still had it. The John Deere 400 I have now from 1975 is okay, but AMF was way ahead of their time mechanically. I had the manuals a few years ago but figured I had no use for them anymore and pitched them. Hope you have luck finding one!

Here are a few pics. Someone did a butcher paint job and painted it red. If it performs well enough over the summer I will do a tear down over the winter and paint the parts properly. I mowed with it for two hours last night, worked well with the exception of the belt coming off the transaxle pulley a couple of times. The clutch is also very sensitive, in 2nd gear when you release the clutch too fast the front tires actually come off the ground. The lights also don't work, and there is a hole left and below the steering wheel that I have no idea what used to be there.

well with that clutch pedal, it reminds me of a Noma. I think Briggs and Stratton ended up with the remains of Noma after they bought Murray.

I think some parts are available-belts, pulleys, spindles- but only if you can get your dealer to call his Briggs distribuitor and have him look for them on the old microfiche.
